Building standards

This group links with both Energy Alton and the Alton Society.  It works closely with the ACAN Lobbying and Campaigning Group to press both national government and East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) to set mandatory requirements for new homes to be built to Passivhaus standards. They also want to see much more council and social housing built to Passivhaus standards: it can be done as the award-winning Goldsmith Street project in Norwich demonstrates.

Retrofitting of existing properties to radically improve their energy efficiency is also vital to reduce carbon emissions. This is needed by EHDC for their own properties, and the public needs information on what they can do, how much it costs and what grants are available. The group will lobby national government for a substantial investment in retrofitting. It will continue to use talks, leaflets, the media and visits to low-energy, retrofitted houses to help people to see what can be done.

The group also promotes alternative sustainably-produced building materials, especially for insulation.
