Riverfly – Invertebrate Sampling in the River Wey in Flood Meadows (tbc)
Join an enthusiastic group of AVLAN volunteers at 10.00 am on Saturday 24th January 2026 for about an hour. We will be kick-sampling for invertebrates, such as cased caddis, freshwater shrimp and mayfly larvae, which are all indicators of water quality.
It’s interesting and fun!
We usually kicksample in Flood Meadows (near the bridge down the path from the entrance on the Basingstoke Road). But we will check the river flow and depth beforehand, and switch the venue to the Bank Car Park (near the Community Centre) if necessary. The River Wey is a Winterbourne, and has been naturally dry near its source from late summer to early winter, until the water table rises after rain and the springs start to flow again.
