ALTON REPAIR CAFE: a film by Alton College Students (Young ACAN)

This film of the work of the volunteers at Alton’s Repair Cafe was made by Alton College film students and showcases the value of repairing rather than discarding items. It was premiered at “Treasure not Trash”: Young ACAN’s third schools’ eco-conference, funded by the Transition Network. This very successful conference brought together 82 pupils from 12 local schools, and inspired them with knowledge about how to become trash-fighting superheroes, fighting rubbish by reducing waste through practical action.

Alton Repair Cafe is run by volunteers who come together regularly in Alton Community Centre to mend items that people bring along for repair. For dates see https://altonclimatenetwork.org.uk/whats-on/ .    Examples are clocks, toys, electrical equipment, furniture, radios, bicycles, ornaments, kettles, clothes & textiles and much more. The Cafe brings together people who have the skills to repair, and aims to pass on knowledge to those who bring items along. This reduces the amount that goes into landfill which is calculated at each session and often reaches over 100kg in weight.
