AVLAN volunteers protecting the river Wey in Alton

A group of 14 volunteers from Alton & Villages Local Action for Nature (one of ACAN’s groups) is working with Glen Skelton, the Wetland Landscapes Officer from Surrey Wildlife Trust, to protect and improve the health of the River Wey in Alton.

Our river is a precious chalk stream, but it faces many pressures. The illustrated blog in the link below describes some of the challenges and how the volunteers and Surrey Wildlife Trust are working to monitor and protect the health of the Wey in and around Alton.

The trained volunteers will check for invertebrate numbers at various points along the river. Where numbers are low, action can be taken, e.g. notifying a pollution incident.
