ORDER YOURS NOW – A FRUIT TREE IN EVERY GARDEN PROJECT

Petersfield Climate Action Network (PeCAN) and partners ACAN, ALFI and LipCAN have launched their annual A Fruit Tree In Every Garden initiative and you are invited to take part! For more information and to order go to https://petersfieldcan.org/projects/trees

Fruit trees are beautiful in spring, fantastic for wildlife and pollinators, sequester carbon dioxide and will even give you fruit to eat.

And… a fruit tree makes a wonderful Christmas present!

Trees are two years old and approximately 1.5 metres tall, growing to 2-2.5 metres when mature. Types of trees available include apple, pear, plum, cherry and ornamental cherry. They usually cost over £30 plus delivery but subsidised through a grant from EHDC, PeCAN can offer them at only £15, with a stake and instructions on how to plant.

In England alone, the total area of gardens is 459% larger than the National Nature Reserves total, so the potential national significance of gardens as a resource for wildlife is clear.

Trees in residential areas contribute to ecosystem services such as climate regulation and air filtration, and they also provide important habitats for wildlife. Trees, shrubs and hedges provide nesting places and materials, food sources and cover for a great variety of creatures. With almost half of Britain’s ancient woodland having been destroyed in the last 50 years, the need for these habitats is greater than ever, and you can help by planting a tree in your garden

Planting fruits trees not only increases biodiversity by bringing wildlife and pollinators into the garden, it also connects people with nature, growing their own food and understanding food security. This project encourages people to plant and look after a tree, venture outside and appreciate their environment.

In the winter of 2020 PeCAN distributed 80 fruit trees for gardens around Petersfield, and this increased to more than 300 in 2021. Please help us increase that number and expand the project in 2022.
